Repurposed Berber Flatweave, Stitched Panel by Panel in Marrakech
This color block hanbel floor sofa carries the quiet weight of real Berber weaving. Panels of grey, ecru, cobalt, terracotta, emerald and charcoal sit side by side across the base and the long backrest. Raised white cord traces diagonal lines over the surface. Moreover, fringed edges along the bolster reveal where each original flatweave was cut and rejoined.
Hanbel is the Moroccan flatweave — a weft-faced textile woven flat rather than knotted. Artisans in Marrakech source these panels from retired rugs and blankets, then stitch them by hand onto a firm cushion core. Because the weave sits dense and low, it resists crushing underfoot. Grey flatweave wraps the side panels, grounding the brighter top surface.
